It is originated from Tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia. Because its natural habitat is underneath the canopy of dense, tropical forests, it adapts quite well to low light levels and controlled temperatures of homes and offices.

Maintainance
Benefits
It is one of the best palm for removing indoor air pollutants and is especially effective for removal of xylene.

• This plant loves frequent misting.
• The date palm prefers weekly feeding schedule, except in winters when feedings can be fortnightly.
• It develops spider mites in dry air.
• Brown fonds may appear from overwatering or use of hard water.
• This palm has sharp needle-like spines arranged near the base of the leaf stem. These can easily penetrate skin, tissue – sometimes even protective clothing. This often results in painful infections and possibly other, direr complications. Keep this plant away from children’s play areas and walkways.

Repotting and propogation
• Repot these palms in pots one size larger every two or three years just as new growth starts in spring. One sign that a plant needs a bigger pot is the appearance of many fine roots on the surface of the potting mixture.
• They propagate most reliably from seeds and will steadily put on growth during their first few years, eventually reaching a mature height of 8 to 10 feet. The seeds germinate slowly, so don't be alarmed if it takes them up to three months to sprout. Older, stored pygmy date palm seeds will reliably germinate if kept under very warm, moist conditions.
Where to plant it?
• It is best seen when given adequate space and is impressive standing alone.
• Planting it around swimming pool gives it a bold statement.
